It is also known as an Ontological Paradox, as ontology is a branch of philosophy concerned with the nature of being or existence. Crook.Ī Bootstrap Paradox is a type of paradox in which an object, person, or piece of information sent back in time results in an infinite loop where the object has no discernible origin, and exists without ever being created. Books: An example of a predestination paradox in a book is Phoebe Fortune and the Pre-destination Paradox by M.S.Movies: Examples of predestination paradoxes in the movies include 12 Monkeys (1995), TimeCrimes (2007), The Time Traveler’s Wife (2009), and Predestination (2014).If she had lived, it would never have existed, so how could you use your machine to go back and save her? You are the inescapable result of your tragedy, just as I am the inescapable result of you.” “You built your time machine because of Emma’s death. His subsequent attempts to save her fail, though, leading him to conclude that “I could come back a thousand times… and see her die a thousand ways.” After then traveling centuries into the future to see if a solution has been found to the temporal problem, Hartdegen is told by the Über-Morlock: Alexander Hartdegen witnesses his fiancee being killed by a mugger, leading him to build a time machine to travel back in time to save her from her fate. In The Time Machine (2002) movie, for instance, Dr. One way of dealing with this type of paradox is to assume that the version of events you have experienced are already built into a self-consistent version of reality, and that by trying to alter the past you will only end up fulfilling your role in creating an event in history, not altering it. Your attempt to change the past has therefore resulted in a predestination paradox. Sound complicated? Imagine that your lover dies in a hit-and-run car accident, and you travel back in time to save her from her fate, only to find that on your way to the accident you are the one who accidentally runs her over. Predestination paradoxes suggest that things are always destined to turn out the same way and that whatever has happened must happen. This circular loop of events ensures that history is not altered by the time traveler, and that any attempts to stop something from happening in the past will simply lead to the cause itself, instead of stopping it. The result is a ‘temporal causality loop’ in which Event 1 in the past influences Event 2 in the future (time travel to the past) which then causes Event 1 to occur. 1: Predestination ParadoxĪ Predestination Paradox occurs when the actions of a person traveling back in time become part of past events, and may ultimately cause the event he is trying to prevent to take place. ![]() 1) Closed Causal Loops, such as the Predestination Paradox and the Bootstrap Paradox, which involve a self-existing time loop in which cause and effect run in a repeating circle, but is also internally consistent with the timeline’s history.Ģ) Consistency Paradoxes, such as the Grandfather Paradox and other similar variants such as The Hitler paradox, and Polchinski’s Paradox, which generate a number of timeline inconsistencies related to the possibility of altering the past. ![]() You can also now export your Pages documents to plain text files. What Else Is New in Pages, Numbers, and Keynote? Comment This could be useful if you were sending out thank you letters for gifts or donations after a fundraising event, for example, where you might want to list the amount or gift given within the body of the letter. Of course, you can still use a traditional spreadsheet, in which case you’ll be able to create whatever fields you want. This includes things like birthdays, anniversaries and other dates, social media handles, related names, and even URLs. Nearly any field in your contacts is fair game for a Mail Merge in Pages the only exception is the Notes field. When setting up the Mail Merge in Pages, you’ll be able to drop in name and address fields that correspond to your contacts, and when you perform the merge, you can select which contact list or group you want to pull the names from. Most significantly, if you’re sending out a letter to a group of friends, family, or colleagues, you don’t need to create a separate spreadsheet you can pull the info directly from the Contacts app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. On the other hand, there’s very little in Pages, Numbers, and Keynote that you can do on the Mac that you can’t also do on your iPad or iPhone.Īpple has also integrated its Mail Merge feature much more tightly into the entire macOS and iOS experience. ![]() Word, Excel, and Powerpoint for iPhone and iPad are quite functional for standard editing, but they lack the advanced features of their desktop counterparts. That’s not surprising since Apple works hard to deliver feature parity across its entire family of devices as much as possible. That’s a nice improvement over Microsoft Word, which offers a solid Mail Merge feature on the desktop, but not on the iPhone or iPad. While it’s been a long time coming, Mail Merge has finally arrived in Pages 12.1 - and it’s not only available on the Mac iPad and even iPhone users can take advantage of it, too. However, all of these have been hacks to make up for a feature that Apple really should have baked in from the beginning. Thanks to Pages’ support for AppleScript, more tech-savvy users have also been able to cobble together their own homegrown solutions. This feature is so in-demand that enterprising developers have built third-party apps to fill the gap. Mail Merge, which lets you create a single document or envelope template that can be used for dozens of recipients, has always been a conspicuous omission in Apple’s word processing app. With today’s update to Pages, though, there may be one less reason to use Microsoft Word Apple has finally brought Mail Merge automation to its writing app. Of course, these apps are much more powerful and may be well worth it if you can find a good deal. However, as intuitive and attractive as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are, it’s also fair to say they’ve always lagged behind their well-known Microsoft counterparts.Īpple’s iWork apps are free, whereas Microsoft’s Word, Excel, and Powerpoint have to be purchased separately. Because this is the order in which the events are handled, you never see the cursor at location 0. So even though you did put the cursor at position 0, the default Entry event for the mouse button is to change the location of the cursor to where you clicked. The Gigabyte M28U has a few additional features available, most of them gaming-oriented. This doesn't have a big impact on the user experience, though, and is only something you'll notice if you're physically measuring objects on your screen. We experienced the problem with our NVIDIA RTX 3070 and AMD RX 6800 graphics cards.Īdditionally, it stretches images very slightly horizontally, as square images are about 2.5% wider horizontally. This problem is only noticeable with high-frame-rate signals like 4k 144Hz 10-bit RGB that use DSC, and not at lower signals that don't require compression, as you can see here, but we can't be sure it's DSC causing the issue. We noticed a similar thing with the Gigabyte AORUS FV43U, although it's less visible on the M28U and not as consistent as sometimes it would be normal. We noticed a pixel inversion issue with pattern #3, which caused stripes to appear, almost in the same spot as the video. We couldn't replicate the issue with real content, so we tried to see if certain test patterns behaved the same. You can see in this video that there are color glitches with certain content. We received user reports about pixel inversion and color discoloration issues with high-frame-rate signals using Display Stream Compression (DSC). While running Windows ClearType can help improve text clarity a bit (top photo), it's not necessary, as text looks good even without it (bottom photo). ![]() The Gigabyte M28U has outstanding text clarity thanks to the high-resolution screen and high pixel density. Added tests for Console Compatibility and macOS compatibility and made minor changes to other tests, which you can see in our Changelog. Updated to Test Bench 1.2, resulting in changes to the results and scores with the Response Time and Input Lag. We tested the monitor with the PS5's new variable refresh rate feature and confirmed that it's working properly. We corrected a typo in the measured brightness after calibration. Updated the monitor to firmware F10, which changed the results in SDR Brightness and HDR Color Gamut as the peak brightness is lower and the tone mapping is worse now. Also confirmed that 1440p works with the PS5. Added a note in Text Clarity to say that square images are slightly stretched horizontally, although it isn't a major concern. |
